What happens to child support payments when you move out of state?
I live in PA now, he lives in NY. If I move to CA what happens to the payments? Do I have to file all over again? He doesn't see "our" son at all never once showed for a visit.

- If the case if through child support recovery it should transfer.
- You should. Either way they'll find out where you are working and take your money again. And expect back payments. My dad tries to move every time child support catches up with him. I think he's just given up on it now though.
- yeah
- No clue. Check wit your state family agency or Attorney General. Mildred sent me.
- I don't believe that you need to re-file anything. I live in California and the laws differ from state to state, but one that more often than not, doesn't change much is child support. Take a look at your support papers to see if there are any clauses about moving out of state, but I don't think you will find any. Google child support online regarding state to state moves for exact help. Sometimes the only thing that limits you is visitation rights, not support. Don't take anyone's word for it, research, research, research. But, to the best of my knowledge, your child support follows you wherever you and your children go. Make sure you have accurate information and supply the father with a copy so he is aware, also, that the law stands behind the parent with the child and non-payment of child support is a very big concern in the court system and whether or not he likes it, he can go to jail if he refuses to pay if you leave. Some men think that because they can't see their child they don't have to pay anymore, but that isn't true. Most of all, stay alert and aware of how he is feeling and if he is a threat. You don't want to be one of those women who's spouse steals their child and disappears! Protect yourself and your child. God bless and good luck.
- You need to notify the child support bureau of your change of address, so the checks can be sent to the new address.
- Since he doesn't live in California, it will transfer to New York in six months. Everything else goes to California, provided you're telling the truth and not just denying his court ordered visitation, to which he could challenge the move of the child.
